For being a 65-page novella, this is a pretty well developed mystery. I can't remember having read a Lady Emily novella before, just the full-length novels, although I've read many a Lady Julia novella. Lady Julia (the creation of Deanna Raybourn) being, of course, Lady Emily's rival for best Victorian upper-class female detective. (Not that they know that they're rivals. They're just in two mystery series I enjoy following.)In this novella we have Lady Emily, her husband Colin and their 3 young children (their biological twins and 1 foster child) coming to visit Emily's parents (Lord and Lady Bromley) at their country estate over the holidays. Additional guests there are a powerful and wealthy Indian maharaja, his wife, their two young adult son and daughter, and the school friend of the son.
A very valuable family heirloom diamond with a supposed curse on it is often worn by the beautiful daughter, along with a gold bangle which is to protect the wearer against the diamond's curse. When both the diamond and the bangle go missing, it's up to Emily and Colin (mostly Emily) to figure out what has happened.
The mystery and the characters are interesting and this is an enjoyable short read. The only thing I didn't like is that there's too much Lady Bromley here. (That's Lady Emily's horrendous mother.) Unfortunately, the story takes place at the horrible mother's home so one can't avoid her, as much as Emily and Colin (and I) would love to. To counteract the awfulness of the mother, we have the cuteness element of the 3 toddlers. It's so good that Emily has found Colin (9 books ago?) because she doesn't have the family support that is found in the Lady Julia series by Raybourn.
BTW, Lady Emily's latest full-length adventure is out now: The Counterfeit Heiress: A Lady Emily Mystery (Lady Emily Mysteries). I haven't read it yet but am looking forward to it.

Another proof that Janet Evanovich earned her writing chops on the way up to her very successful Stephanie Plum series. There was no doubt in my mind that the hero and heroine would develop a romantic relationship but there were lots of unexpected twists and turns to keep the story fresh and funny. The secondary characters were well drawn and well used to provide suspense and humor in the story. I particularly liked the use of the family ghost to liven up the story. I not only liked this book but have also bought several others to enjoy.
Tasha Alexander is a great writer. She does not need explicit sexual scenes to make her novels so intriguing. The love story between Lady Emily and Colin is so exquisite. Plus her way with writing mysteries is just great. I love her characters that is except Lady Emily's mother, who is atrocious. I love how as a writer she does not leave it to a man to save the day. But a very nice way to write as to having them be equals man and female. Not a stupid woman or a woman on a mission but just smart and capable. But yet relies on her husband on others when need be.
Great story love the ending.
This tweeny story was full of humor and holiday spirit alongside an engaging mystery. I enjoyed the time with Emily, Colin, their little boys, and a surprise guest at her mother's house party with the guests of honor being a maharajah and his family no less.
A treasured jewel and bracelet of the maharajah's daughter goes missing and the jewel ends up in Emily's possession. To avoid a potential diplomatic incident and trouble before the holidays for she and her family, the situation must be resolved.
The mystery was a cozy one and the focus was on relationships, family, and new acquaintances as much as finding the thief. It was enjoyable spending a little more time in the Lady Emily world during the Christmas holiday season.
I want so much to like this series, but the more Lady Emily mysteries I read the more irritated I become with her. This was a short story with a ridiculously unbelievable cast of characters, but I will give the next book in the series a try just to see if anything changes. Everyone in the list of recurring characters is just too modern for belief or too stuffy and snobbish for belief. Give us some real people who are trying to come to terms with a changing world, trying to make changes in a believable way or aware of the changes looming in the future and frightened by them. If Lady Emily was even a little conflicted about the differences between her Victorian upbringing and the independence she is trying to embody it would be helpful. Rather than being appealing and courageous she is insufferably smug and self-satisfied. I would still recommend this series for those who love historical fiction, as I do.
As this is the Christmas season, reading about Christmas, traditions, and company is enjoyable for me. The Lady Emily mysteries is also enjoyable for me. Putting all of that together provides readers and me with a great Christmas story. The author's characters come to life in this story as in the other novels of Lady Emily's mysteries that I have read. Lady Emily has her hands full with her mother. Her mother, I think, is not a very happy person, and she appears to take this out on Lady Emily. Although this hurts Lady Emily, she has her loving husband to 'even out' the feelings. I like Lady Emily, her husband, Colin, and their sweet sons. Christmastime is for children of all ages, and this is shown in this story. The love Lady Emily and Colin show their sons is delightful. The fact that seems to horrify Lady Emily's mother makes it all the better especially during Christmas because Christmas is not just about decorations, fine meals, and entertaining company. Those things Lady Emily's mother does well. Christmas is about family and love of family. In these areas 'mom' needs to improve, and the sooner she does so, all curses, I feel, will disappear. I would recommend this story to those who enjoy a holiday mystery. This story definitely made my holiday a better one. Thanks, Lady Emily, and , of course, Ms. Alexander!
