I love dystopia novels and I chose this book for my 12 year old to read, as well as myself. I also LOVE books that feature a strong, female heroine, instead of the usual male hero. I find this book encouraging to girls to give them a strong sense of accomplishment and personal success in a world that is male-centered. 12 year old Hope Toriella is the hero of this book. She's a misfit at inventions, which are very important to her fellow townspeople, but her desire for adventure is where her true talent lies.

It's hard to review this book without giving spoilers, but I will say that there is no sex, and violence is minimal and not very intense at all. It's a perfect book for girls and boys since there is plenty of action and very scary situations. I will say that it is set after WWIII when "green bombs" were dropped that poisoned most of the population to death. The gas of these green bombs is of a nature that distorts the natural composition and thickness of air, resulting in a layer that slows down anything (or anyone - Hope) passing through it. But it will kill you so you'll have to know how to do it right. Hope has learned how to use this skill to the benefit of her town, White Rock.

It's a fun, exciting read, with great character development which I really love to see in a book. I tend to have a need to personally understand and know the characters, especially the main characters. Ms. Eddleman has done an excellent job of character and situational development. My 12 year old girl loved this book and is looking forward to books to come in this series. I loved it too!

My son thought it was a little slow to get to the excitement but once he got there couldn't put it down and now can't wait for book 2!
This book is written from the perspective of a 12 year old girl who lives in a small town after WW III. The author does a great job letting "Hope" tell us how the world has changed since the green bombs were dropped in 2060. I highly recommend this book!
Occasionally cheesy but I enjoyed the young heroine who had so much self-doubt but turns out to be critical to her town’s survival.
This is an easy to read story, with some great characters. The storyline is a simple one, with mischief, friendships, rule breaking, fear, danger, disappointment , bravery and success. Perfect for readers of 8+.
My 9 year old who is an avid reader requested this book after it was on his Blue Bonnet reading list this year. He liked it so much that he is waiting for book 2.
My daughter loved this book.
I originaly bought this book because I saw it on a bookmark and it looked good. It was letdown though. Not enough adventure and it didn't really hold my attention for long. The second ones supposed to be better so I'm crossing my fingers.
It's not often enough that we get to come across something that makes a new level of awesomeness all of it's own - but this book does! It did not let me down in the least and I went in with high expectations. But its more than that! This book is even better than I imagined, and gives me all the things I want my kids to read... and then some! It's fun, brilliant, daring, and creative. This is a world that everyone needs to experience and shares such a wonderful, touching message, that I'd love to pass on to my kids and students. Don't miss out on this extraordinarily epic story!
