The New York Times–bestselling series in one volume

Born to a British army officer and a Chinese refugee, Nicholas Linnear grows up in Japan, where he falls in love with the nation’s culture, its history, and its deadliest martial arts.

In The Ninja, Linnear quits his job abruptly when he feels himself yearning for the life he led in Japan. Searching for direction, he meets a striking beauty named Justine and is beginning to fall in love when something chilling draws him back into his past the corpse of a coworker, murdered by a Japanese throwing star. There is a ninja loose in New York City, and as the body count rises, it becomes clear that people close to Linnear are being targeted. Only he has the skill to stop a twisted killer with a personal vendetta.

In The Miko, Linnear vows revenge after his best friend dies under suspicious circumstances. But although he may look American, a childhood spent in the dojos of Japan taught Linnear that vengeance must never be hurried. He takes a job for the billionaire industrialist who ordered the murder, planning to befriend his target during a trip to Tokyo. But even for a modern-day ninja, there is such thing as too close for comfort.

In White Ninja, a sadist haunts the back alleys and sex clubs of Tokyo, picking up women, horrifically mutilating them, and leaving behind a calling card written in blood This could be your wife. He kills fearlessly, certain the police will never catch him. The only man who might stop this fiend is Nicholas Linnear, one of the country’s leading practitioners of ninjutsu.

I read at least one of these in my mid teens (the 3 books contained in this volume are mature, so be warned). I remembered very little details (heh, long time ago) at least until I read them again but I remember that these books did much to spark my interest in martial arts and most especially Japanese martial arts. I've been active in martial arts for over 31 years now, with well over half of that being in Japanese arts. A big thank-you to Mr. Lustbader for sparking that interest with his work.
--- Now, all that said, these are fiction and no matter how well researched and how authentic they seem on many points (there ARE a lot of real points in these stories), these are FICTION and contain some utterly fantastic, unreal, silver-screen sort of stuff. BUT, despite my entire adult life having been spent in serious pursuits of martial skills, and being generally a stickler for the realistic portrayal of such things, I greatly enjoyed the story. Ergo, the casual reader with little to know martial arts experiences should find them riveting as well.

The Nicholas Linnear Novels The Ninja The Miko and White Ninja The Nicholas Linnear Series edition by Eric Van Lustbader Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I started to read this book many years ago, but never finished it. I got the book again on my Paperwhite. I could NOT put the book down! This is a very dark and complex story. Mr. Lustbader does a fine job creating an interesting and gripping storyline to grab the reader's attention quickly. He also goes into great detail talking about the early history of China and Japan. He also is a very descriptive writer. I could " see " in my mind's eye many of the beautiful locations and scenes in this story! You will also meet many interesting villains and friends Nicholas Linnear encounters as the story unfolds. I am now reading The Miko, the second book in The Nicholas Series. If you like action and adventure stories and a gripping storyline, read this book.
I was talking to a friend recently who lives on Long Island. She mentioned Dune Road & I recalled the first murder in the book takes place outside a house on Dune Road.
Eric Lustbader writes a masterful first chapter of the kind I rarely see any more except from top selling fiction writers.
The opening chapter is heavy with imagery & atmosphere ....
and the entire book should be read with Musashi's Book of Five Rings close at hand.
As a owner I really wish this book had been in ebook format. I have no idea why it is not.
And I wish I'd searched harder for a used HARDBACK edition as since the book is quite long... in paperback, being spoiled by an Paperwhite... where I can adjust font size, line/margins and screen definition....
Attempting to read this in paperback... reminds me how challenging that can be.
Still... the book itself... anyone interested in Martial Arts... will find this one of the best martial arts mystery thrillers ever written.
If I were Eric Van Lustbader, I'd be rioting to re-introduce it to America via the ebook revolution.
Don't even remember where I was living when I read it originally... just that for a time I was transfixed by a new and exotic and amazing world of action, philosophy, culture, language... via Van Lustbader's writing in this book.
I highly recommend it! Upon Re-READING... I have found that it holds up beautifully to my memory of it...
and that has not always been the case!
I have truly enjoyed Van Lustbader over the years while he was still an author. These are extremely well researched and present a glimpse into Japanese history without the text book boredom. The stories are well written with great attention to detail and continuity. The characters seem real and are nicely developed. Some sex and violence. Overall great story telling.
The story was recommended to me by my husband, and while I enjoyed the story for the most part, the female characters were one dimensional and almost comical in their development. They were either bat-shit crazy, or nymphomaniacs, or both. I did learn a lot about the ninja culture and enjoyed the author's settings. Ever the good wife, I trudged through to the end.
Interesting tale with many twists and turns. The basic story flows smoothly but there is a point where the storyline goes off course before returning to the pathway. Eastern ways meet western, some mythology mixed with history to keep the story moving along. The story has several more books continuing the storyline. I look forward to reading more of the books in the series. I really enjoyed the story and would recommend the series.
The first book (The Ninja) is great, a very detailed romp through historic Japanese culture and modern-day-ish business dealings. It was exciting and I felt like I learned something...worthy of 5 stars by itself. To me, the subsequent two books are just ok and pull down the worth of the series. They had some potential with interesting character perspectives and some plot twists. But both can drag on-and-on with flash-backs and back-story, while both have endings that are abrupt and rather unfulfilling.
The original books were excellent. However I was disappointed in this e-version as parts were missing in The Miko which resulted in some confusing leaps in the story. I still enjoyed the books, but whoever transferred the book into a digital version, missed a few parts.
