The previous episode in the Vorkosigan Saga, A Civil Campaign, is my favorite of all the Mile's books, which makes it a hard act to follow. Rather than repeat with an exquisitely written piece combining humor with the travails of prenuptial hell, Diplomatic Immunity goes for a straight action/adventure dose of adrenalin. Miles and Ekaterine have married, honeymooned, and planted their seed in two fetuses growing safely in baby pods while they return home via space ship. Wouldn't you know it, the emperor who considers Miles his favorite trouble shooter has the couple intercepted mid journey and hustled to a space station ready to explode from the tensions aroused by ham handed military men who don't know the meaning of the word subtle. One thing leads to another, a cascade of crisis up the stakes to mass murder and interstellar war and has Miles putting everything on the line to put out multiple fires. Will he pull it off, who knows, but its fun to watch the demi-speedster in action. Fast paced, masterfully plotted, lots of action but with a good heart-Bujold is in her element and delivers one of her best.Tags : Diplomatic Immunity [Lois McMaster Bujold] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. In *Diplomatic Immunity*, Lois McMaster Bujold returns us to Graf Station, scene of her early non-Vorkosigan novel, *Falling Free*. Here we find the Quaddies, humans bio-engineered 200 years previously by Earth scientists for space station work in zero G. have evolved a democratic society and culture much to be admired.
The mystery is a good one. Lois has been perfecting that genre under the guise of sci-fi for several books now. The later Miles novels--- *Mirror Dance*, *Memory*, *Cetaganda*, *A Civil Campaign*---have themselves evolved from 'Miles Vorkosigan Adventures' to 'Miles Vorkosigan Detective Stories'.
Whodunits are fine, but Action and Admiral Naismith, key components of earlier Bujold novels, are missing. I always enjoyed Miles and the Admiral gallivanting around the galaxy, overcoming physical, prejudicial, or mental challenges---whether external or of his own making.
The story maintains interest using other jewels in Lois' crown--- fully-formed characters; well-woven plot; and a good sense of technical ambiance (weaving technical stuff into the story without being too technical about it). Adding Lord Auditor and expectant father Miles Vorkosigan, his plucky bride Ekaterin, stoic Armsman Roic, interesting bad guys and Quaddie bureaucrats to the soup improves its flavor. Sadly missing, however, is the witty repartee that Miles has enjoyed in past stories with the villain-du-jour, or his patter with straight man Cousin Ivan.
I found most enjoyable Miles' reunion with Dendarii herm-in-Arms, Bel Thorne. We find Bel romantically linked with Quaddie musician Nicole (former hostage from a past Miles Adventure) and enjoying a quieter life aboard Graf Station.
If you haven't read the Miles Vorkosigan novels before, obtain the early books or *Young Miles* to get a good appreciation how far Miles has come and if you like more Action. But if you are a dedicated Miles fan, *Diplomatic Immunity* is an important chapter in the Miles saga you don't want to miss.
I am a Vor fan, have all of the books, mostly in hardcover, and have downloaded most on to my . Mile's search for a Lady Vorkosigan has gained a bit of momentum in the last books, he is a Vorkosigan, after all, I knew if he picked Barrayar it would be a matter only of time before a wife became a major issue. After a Love Story that begins in Murder and Mayhem, is pursued in intrigue, & events that bring social farce to a new height, we finally get to see Miles back in the thick of it with a wife that not only understands him, but who can manage to assist him in his work without the outrage and exasperation of most people who, not knowing Miles, figure he's either demented, or up to no good!(Snicker) I usually reread the series every 5 years or so, happily Ms Bujold is kind enough to keep adding to the series. Despite the physical damage Miles keeps acquiring, may he live long, Barrayar, & his fans need him to be around for as long as possible.
While lacking the humor of "A Civil Campaign" and the intense personal interactions of "Mirror Dance", "Diplomatic Immunity" offers a tight detective story that features LMB's clear views of future bioscience and Lord Auditor Miles Vorkosigan's insigts and incisive decision making once again saving the day.
In my reviews, I have never adequately lauded LMB's use of words. In no other series can I remember so many highlighted phrases, from simple puns to aphorisms that could guide a career or a life. For example, at the end of this book, as Miles meets his first children, he thinks "He had been the end point of human evolution. At this moment he abruptly felt more like a missing link." I have never heard or read a more accurate, pithy statement of what new parenthood means. Kudos.
