I like the challenge this gives my first grader and the extra practice in word problems. However, the problems are a little strange. Several in the first section involved animals dying, which seems not only morbid, but a little age inappropriate. For example, one problem was about fish in an aquarium dying. Another discussed duck eggs not hatching and a third described caterpillars that do not survive to become butterflies. Luckily, my son just thought those were strange topics for word problems, as I did.
This series is a challenging set of problems (not all are actually word problems) organized by topic. Each topic has two sets of problems One that is practice and a second set of challenging questions. Excellent selection that will enable mastery of the topics. No more endless busywork problems like most other workbooks.
This is a great book! It's challenging in a good way. A kind of problems that let my students to practice their "thinking skills". Indeed, some word problems are odd and involve animals dying. I believe this is a cultural difference. I just skip those, as there are plenty to choose from.
My son is almost 7 and this book is a great supplement to what he learns at school. I am a firm believer of challenging kids in a positive way!!
