I read and was blown away by The Tied Man by Tabitha McGowan over a year ago. I read it again about six months ago. Still, I've done nothing but apply the measly five stars I'm allowed to bestow upon this utter masterpiece; it deserves so many more! How can I adequately capture the genius, romance, horror, depravity, and fairytale nature of this most unique book?I decided to let the book represent itself in a manner of speaking.
When the book begins, Finn and Lilith have yet to be brought together. I would say that she came not a moment too soon!
Finn: The summer I met Lilith Bresson, I had begun to die. Not physically, you understand. I had never been that lucky. But each day, a little more of my soul disappeared, and Blaine sensed it. And Blaine Albermarle never let anything escape without a fight.
To the average reader, the beginning is very slow-going. Let me give you a tip? Think of the first ¼ of the book as a place for certain clues to be planted. EVERY single detail will become relevant later on in the book even if it doesn’t seem relevant at the time. People miss that and assume it’s a boring book and give up right there and then. Don’t do that, because you’d really be giving up a lot. Wait until Lilith spends her first night at Albermarle Hall before you give up. You’ll either thank me or hate me for that advice. Cé la vie.
Have you ever wanted to read something truly unique—something that isn’t just another take on a familiar theme? Do you like dark romances? Can you handle depravity? Do you like romance (not insta-luv, but the kind that builds)? Do you like impossible-odds romances? What about Contemporary Romance? There are times when the dialogue between Finn and Lilith is so very normal. In the middle of all of the crazy, the two of them find their own sanity.
Note: This novel is not appropriate for anyone with any sort of abuse triggers whatsoever!
As dark as it gets is as light as it can be as well.
Finn lives in Hell. He can’t escape it. He signed the paperwork, but he’s a prisoner for other reasons I won’t give away.
Finn: "At the end of the day, everything I do costs me. The only question is how much."
The Albermarle Retreat is a getaway free from modern technology to allow one live out his or her greatest fantasy free from reprisal (or so everyone believes).
When Finn Strachan met Lilith Bresson for the first time, he could tell she had a TRUE gift for cutting through the BS, and I think he harbored some hopes of … something … whether that something was rescue or just understanding, I don’t know. When he thought she didn’t actually see what was going on behind the scenes, he thought:
“It was easy to forget that other people lived in a world where rules and laws and common sense could keep you safe. A world where, if you did the right thing, you were allowed to get on with your life in whichever way you chose.”
In the end, she was just as much a prisoner as he. They were both subject to the sadistic machinations of “Lady” Blaine Albermarle—the great villain of this masterpiece. Her character (as all of the characters are) is so well done that my hatred for her is as palpable as my compassion and love for Finn is. The same is true of my admiration and adoration for Lilith. That is the mark of a great story and storyteller.
All of these people and what they have endured has stuck with me since the moment I finished it for the first time, and I may actually read it a third time when the second book, which deals with their HEA, comes out.
It’s a romance, so to say that the ending is lackluster in the HEA category and is more of a HFN isn’t blasphemous. Relax. Ms. McGowan is working on finishing this HEA ending for us, but, believe me, The Tied Man is completely a standalone book. What comes next is like an extended epilogue. All you need to know, you will know, and it will be MORE than satisfying! There are NO cliffhangers at all. Before I end the review, I want to share some of the romance…

Note: The phrase "a chuisle" is pronounced in a few ways, but this is my favorite. It's a soft, almost nonexistent "K."
Uh Khoosh—Lah
Lilith: "What did you call me?"
Finn: "Ah. A chuisle. Gaelic. 'My Darling.' I prefer the proper translation, mind you."
Lilith: "Which is?"
He gave a bashful smile.
Finn: "My pulse."

This is one rough book. It is also the best one I’ve read in years! This review can never do it justice. It’s just that good. Finn has innate strength and integrity, so do not ever think of his character as weak. Lilith is a knight in shining armor, but she is also delicate and in need of our strong Finn. This is a true adventure. There’s even a castle, a moat of sorts, and a dungeon. All of this craziness is wrapped up in a romance that can light up a night sky like the aurora borealis!
*****************************
Finn: The momentary discomfort was nothing at all compared to the realization that she was finding refuge in my flawed embrace.
*****************************
Lilith: A gathering of butterflies danced in my stomach, and I couldn't quite look at him. "The only thing I want is to lie there and be held by you again." Finn didn't say anything. He just leaned over and wrapped his arms around my trembling body. "Like this?" he asked. "Yeah, like this." I finally let myself relax into the embrace of the man I'd just driven three hundred miles to be with.

This piece of literature is poetry hidden within prose. It’s masterfully written. It’s full of suspense, pain, joy, beauty, love, hope, ugliness, and despair. You will get more than you pay for with this one, ladies and gentleman; I definitely did. Someone asked me what kind of mind could write something like this (a question that was asked before that someone read the book by the way), and my only answer is “a genius.” I truly cannot wait for The Tied Man: Unbound, which I believe will be coming out either at the end of this year or at the beginning of next. I’ll put my money on this year!
Check out these two awesome trailers I found for The Tied Man. They’re very different from one another, but both might help to give you a better idea of what I am trying to express than I can myself.
In closing, I give my deepest thanks to Tabitha McGowan.

The Tied Man edition by Tabitha McGowan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Oh my gosh, this book had my stomach in knots for the vast majority of the time. I had to take breaks just to breathe because there were some parts where I knew what was coming next and I absolutely dreaded it. Initially, Lilith starts out as this cold and detached character, because quite frankly, she seemed b*tchy and she has this way with words where she cuts people off at the knees. Part of it is how incredibly perceptive she is where she can accurately assess other people within seconds and the other part of it is how she keeps people away from her at arm's length. Lilith only cares about herself and her younger sibling, no one else. She came off rather selfish, but I understood that was part of her self-preservation because Lilith has a shady upbringing. She is a gifted artist which makes her somewhat of a celebrity that has drawn the attention of Lady Blaine Abermarle, who has invited Lilith to her home to do some portraits for her. Actually, Lilith is coerced into going there against her choice and once she does, she is unable to leave. While Lilith is still very much the same person as before, things change. New characters are introduced and the whole setup of Abermarle place is downright horrific. While Blaine might seem polished and refined on the outside, Blaine is truly vile and evil. Her employees are complicit and cannot leave because she has bound them to a contract they cannot escape if they don't want their loved ones harmed, the biggest victim being Finn. I expected Finn to be this fragile and vulnerable guy that had a very toned down personality. He was not like that at all, he surprised me in so many ways. Despite the situation that stripped him of all pride and dignity, Finn was a survivor and fighter at heart. He spoke his mind honestly and formed a friendship with Lilith. He could fend for himself when necessary, but unfortunately, most of the times he was helpless to do so. Although Finn and Lilith are drawn to each other, this isn't a love story where there's mounting sexual tension and passion between them. Instead Lilith has to bear witness to Blaine offering Finn to her guests and it's disgusting and heartbreaking. Although Lilith isn't easily shocked, she manages to adapt to her circumstances. She has to make some tough decisions regarding her moral boundaries versus protecting Finn and there's consequences for each choice. I really admired seeing Lilith in this situation because it was so awful and yet she knew the right thing to do was to advocate for Finn in whatever way she possibly could, otherwise no one else would. She wanted to give him back a fraction of his humanity and she showed how selfless she could be. She didn't break down and neither did Finn and I kept hoping things would get better, but they always got worse first. This is a very dark read that isn't for everyone, there's some sarcastic humor, but otherwise it's extremely well written and I finished it hoping that Lilith and especially Finn would eventually find peace in their lives.
I'm not sure what I was expecting when I read this, but it surprised me in a mostly positive way. 'The Tied Man' was a harsh read, leaning towards stark brutality in some scenes. The story worked though, and everything melded together to tell a coherent and cohesive tale, with a satisfying conclusion.
At first, I didn't care for the heroine Lilith at all. She came across as a self-centered, slutty b**** (Yeah - I judged her as a particularly mean, nasty ho, a-la-plane incident. So what. My opinion, my review). As I read, some of her positive qualities came to the surface. I must say that I did love her smart-a** mouth. lol
Finn was an enigma, understandably, but I felt for him right from the start. He had a crap-load of issues along with the drugs, but one could understand his plight. He was a huge mess.
Other characters - the likeable ones and the hated ones, i.e. The Über B**** Blaine and Coyle, along with some of their deviant clients, deserved to burn in hell, and for me, they didn't quite get what they truly deserved.
*SPOILER-ISH*
There were two items that threw me for a loop
1. There was no real sadness regarding the demise of Finn's dog, Bran
2. After all of the crap that Finn went through, he should have walked with a permanent limp, at the very least.
Anyway...'The Tied Man' was a pretty good read
