I purchased Dies The Fire in paperback some time ago and had been looking for the 2nd in the series for a while before breaking and buying the kindle edition. I admit...I'm not impressed. Too much unnecessary detail and side stories that simply aren't relevant to the story itself. I didn't care about the Englishmen. That entire side story could have been reduced to a chapter. I admit I skimmed half the book then jumped straight to the last chapter and epilogue and still don't feel I missed much. Second issue: even in book 1 I never understood Mike and Signes relationship. There was almost no chemistry between the characters; Signe was never more than a collection of cliches with no real personality; their entire interaction reads like a mans wish fulfillment for a hot teenager and, later, another cliche of a cookie cutter wife right out of a bad southern tragedy. Its quite clear to me Sterling didn't put a great deal of thought, care or effort into her character which I feel is unfair to the character, women in general and ... The reader after giving us a couple that DID have chemistry and would have been perfect together with a lot of tension and conflict (Juniper and Mike). Instead he gives us Male Wish Fulfillment Trophy Wife and boring "jealous" tripe. After sitting through endless boring detail about castles and weaponry and British politics that brought nothing to the story, I feel cheated by the authors laziness with interpersonal relationships. Second, I find the whole character of the Protector silly and unrealistic. There's no way a professor would have banded together so many diverse gangs. It might have worked for about five minutes while they were starving but as soon as they were feed and armed they'd have figured out a way to kill him then turn on each other. He'd have spent so much time just holding off rival factions from killing him he wouldn't have had time to build a kingdom. Sterling's understanding of human nature seems narrow and naive and yet, he expects us to simply accept this impossibility. Can a plot point be a Mary Sue? I'm going to read 3 (Corvallis) but with reservations. Mostly I just want to know how it ends and a reference for Rudi's adventure to find out what really happened in Nantucket.Tags : The Protector's War (A Novel of the Change) [S. M. Both the Protector and the Bearclan and the Moonclans grow and prosper. Into this we find out about what happened to the rest of the world as we go to England and follow the Lorings, Father and Son. With a bit of the Aussies as machinery of the gods, and cameos from the British Royal family, the story definitely spices up nicely. Good series.
Eight years have passed since Dies the Fire. I'm a little sorry for that since I'd have liked to read more about how they adapted, how they scavenged for things in the dead cities. I think there's at least another book there, and perhaps Stiirling might want to write it one day. But eight years has given the societies time to develop in their unique way. The younger people are fully adapted and we see how easily they've stepped into a new world. The military gamesmanship between the PP and the Mackenzies and Bearkillers and their allies continues, and we get the introduction of more Englishmen and more growth among the new societies. There's a lot which happens which can't be written without spoilers, but safe to say this is a runup book to the next war. I liked it a lot.
20 words is just not enough to describe the first 3 books of Stirling’s Change Series...a least in the top 3-5 of Apocalyptic Science Fiction...which these books truly are...
Going forward yes, the Magical Elements slowly gets stronger, until the interference of various aspects of multiple Deities are quite obvious...but these first 3 books, the Wiccan Magic is certainly more subtle! Incredibly strong characters and laying the groundwork for over 20 books to come!
I've read The Protector's War multiple times over the years, and it's a good setup for the third book. I really do enjoy the escapist fantasy.
However, one bone that I have with this series is that Emberverse is far less credible than the Nantucket series. S. M. Stirling tried to explain the science in part of this books, but it doesn't work. If pressure does not increase as one shoves more gas into a container (but rather that the gas molecule somehow stores the excess pressure as potential energy), then this means that gas containers can be far more efficient.
Someone like Ken Larsson would certainly then realized that things like hot hair balloons would be more efficient (you can put more hydrogen / methane into a container). This would in turn introduce an alternative evolution to warfare beyond the medieval one that was described by the book. Imagine that you would just have a fleet of gliders elevated by hot air balloons then assault a castle. (Balloons effectively nullifies the castle walls' height advantage and is cheaper to build).
There are numerous other things like thermite reaction will probably still work, making the point of a castle gate pointless (you can place thermite charges that would just melt any gate off of its hinges).
My conclusion is that the body of human knowledge since the middle ages is just too large for an event like the Change to revert our world to the anything like the middle ages.
